News2026-04-24
A major DARPA award, led by VIDA Center faculty Claudio Silva and Chinmay Hegde, puts NYU at the forefront of one of the most ambitious bets in science: that AI can help mathematicians crack problems that have persisted for generations.
NYU has been selected as one of 13 teams in the inaugural cohort of the Exponentiating Mathematics (expMath) program, a newly launched initiative from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Department of Defense’s independent research arm known for funding high-risk, high-reward technologies. The NYU team's project is led by Principal Investigator (PI) Claudio Silva, Institute Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and a professor in the NYU Center for Data Science, and Co-PI Chinmay Hegde, an associate professor at NYU Tandon.
